Course description:
The goal of this course is to introduce the student to the fundamentals of acting for film and theatre. The class focuses on how the actor creates truthful human behavior through the use of objectives, character development, given circumstances, subtext, obstacles and physical business. The course will be divided into three parts: the first part of the course will focus on acting exercises based on the work of Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner, Viola Spolin and others. Through these exercises students will learn to free their body, voice and imagination; the second part of the class will consist of scene study. Students will be assigned basic scenes from film and theater scripts. Improvisation based on the text will help the students develop spontaneity and concentration; and the final part of the course will be devoted to script analysis based on the methods of Judith Weston. Students will explore an understanding of scene subtext and learn techniques that will help them create believable performances and make bold choices. Students will be required to keep an actor’s journal and develop an inner monologue revealing the character’s subtext for a final presentation. Certificate of completion will be awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the course.
