Course description:
This course focuses on generating engaging and effective design communication vehicles and prepares students for a career in advertising and marketing communication or its associated areas. Advertising Communication fosters the idea that advertising is an important cultural mechanism in reflecting life today. It is hard to ignore advertising as it has an immense influence and presence in everyday life. Advertising Communication is a study that engages more than the art of persuasion or making a sale but also upholds structures of meaning which construct lifestyles, beliefs, behaviours and attitudes today. This specialism aims to develop a comprehensive picture of the interconnected role of advertising in everyday communication. It conveys the objects or services through the selling premises, tactics and visual messages to the relevant audience according to their personal tastes and beliefs. The core of advertising communication must be about the understanding of its ideological meanings and functions and not just for economic and commercial purposes. In order to do this, the craft of directing advertising campaigns or projects must be underpinned by a sound knowledge in advertising principles, marketing communication and a critical and theoretical awareness of business and ethics. It is a multi-layered industry that has become increasingly important making advertising a significant tool in international communication. The specialism aims to develop creative practitioners who think strategically, and strategists who think creatively.
