Course description:
This course focuses on two key disciplines: Illustration and Photography. It concentrates on the framework of contemporary image making, from traditional methods to digital and time-based media applications. Particular emphasis is placed on experimentation and the exploration of a repertoire for all types of image making, from realistic to expressive images. Focusing on the design process as an important mechanism for learning; the outcomes could be produced in two-dimensional, three dimensional and digital media. The crafts of Illustration and Photography are powerful tools used by creative studios and various industries. Imagery serves an important function in communication. As cross-disciplinary initiatives increase and take over the multi-faceted aspects of Design Communication, the specialism of image and communication will provide a platform for social communication. It is and will be about the image - contextualising representations of society and culture signifying the connotations of everyday life. Images have influenced thinking, perception and interpretation and will continue to form modern society. Visual culture and associated phenomena outline exciting and unexplored possibilities of how images can translate meaning and convey unique messages. Image-makers today face the challenge of not just working on the craft and aesthetic qualities of the image but more importantly the idea, purpose and communication agenda of the design and the design process of that image. There is a responsibility for image-makers to design with conceptual confidence and intellect, with an eye for details and with appropriate stylistic and technical capabilities regardless of whether for commercial or non-commercial purposes. The specialism’s study will span from the first cave-wall drawings to the stimulating digital era of contemporary visual culture and the exciting and captivating images in films that have moved different audiences regardless of age, racial and cultural background.
